Balboa Park

Well, nothing says breakfast like a root beer float!  We arrive at Balboa Park to hit an art glass sale amid architecture and culture and the warm aromas of hot dogs and popcorn wafting through the air (which might have been a healthier meal ala tube bacon and dried grits).  In our defense, it's another 92 degree day; it almost makes the root beer floats reasonable. August (1!) and I picked up a few trinkets. Glass is so glittery!  But truly, a lot of talented people who will never reach Chihuly levels of fame.

We also visited the Botanical Garden. Great ideas for orchids if you had a structure like this structure in your yard. Some great, if not melting, walking again this morning. August recuperated poolside, and I chose the air conditioned room.

Plans for a real meal involved an artisan pizza from a wood-fired oven. Fred/Dad/Buddy must get on this. Fig, pancetta, goat cheese, covered in Arugula. Stunning!  Thin crust though, Buddy!  Nice bottle of Flowers Pinot Noir. August is a big fan of Brussels sprouts, so those were ordered. And clearly we were way too hungry because we also ordered olives and almonds. Too much food!  Would love to show you the cheesecake s'more--looked like a baked Alaska--but we inhaled it!  All in all, a great way to spend time with another sister. What's up May??  Tomorrow, Home(s).

La Hoy Ya

Up bright an early with a 12ish mile drive to La Jolla.  August (1!) is frustrated by directions on the iPad, but we arrive in time to have a decent, if noisy, breakfast.  We stroll to a section of beach with signs to clearly deter anyone from having fun. Except the sea gulls, who patiently wait for a young mom to turn her back as they descend on a bag of open Doritos. We then set out determined to find "the best shopping in La Jolla" (courtesy Google/Alphabet TM). Saw much of the area, but mostly Scripps and UCSD, where we tried not to become part of a health study due to lingering too long trying to figure out the directions. Decided we had passed good shopping targets near Hotel Del, so we drove back (I'm getting better at finding Coronado) and parked just in time for the thermometer to reach 92.

We were probably just too hot to care by then, so the only purchases were sorbet and books--I chose a thriller, "After Hitler, the last ten days of WWII in Europe."  Can hardly wait to crack the spine!  We then decided to walk the beach on Coronado. All totaled, we walked about five miles. We did meet a nice gentleman who threw us ever so gently off the Navy's section of sand. Absolutely no indicators to help, like "no civilians beyond this point."  Makes you wonder how things are going with our military around the rest of the world: "please No mischief in Iraq . . . Afghanistan . . . Etc."

Watched the irony of a flock of sea gulls watching a horde of people, both groups ducking in and out of the waves. Stopped to get a pic of the 100+ year old Dragon tree featured in the movie, "Some Like It Hot" with Marilyn Monroe. Said so right on the plaque!  Other nice flora on the grounds.

Back up to the Sun Deck, emphasis on sun, before dinner at 1500 Ocean.  Delicious, friendly, and at the hotel, read no parking issues.  Tomorrow, Balboa Park.

The Grande Dàme

A zippy flight down the coast for me, but a longer stretch for August 1--and don't you forget it--coming in from O'Hare.  August (1!) is a nervous passenger as I am trying to read directions and drive at the same time. Arrive at the Hotel Del Coronado to bushels of blue hair and no room availability. So, what to do . . . Two plus hours in the Sun Deck Bar and Grill, and a stroll, carrying a few too many items, along the beach. This place must be special, the sand is strewn with grains of gold!  We finally land a room in the Ocean Towers, settle in and head out to Seaport Village. Not at all awesome.  The best part was the guy on the pier feeding his named sea gulls. I indicated to August that surely HE must be available. 😏

Next stop was Little Italy for some dinner. Recommended place is clearly great as it is packed and there is no parking anywhere near. Head back to Hotel Del to catch a meal, and while we certainly had parking, no availability for dinner (the joint is packed; blue haireds have money). So, shared hamburger in the room and an early crash. Hitting La Jolla in the morning.
